John removed with his brother Joshua to Henniker just before the commencement of the Civil War. He enlisted for service with his brother on 29 Aug 1862 in the 11th Vol Reg., Co. D. Unlike his brother, he survived Fredericksburg, and during the Mississippi campaign in 1863, he contracted a disease which would ultimately claim his life. When his regiment returned to Kentucky, he was placed in the hospital at Camp Nelson and died there 24 Feb 1864.
