In the early years of John and Nora's marriage, they lived in a smallhouse on his father's farm. They had a young daughter who died whilestill living in Wisconsin. They moved about 1876 to Nebraska where he homesteaded a farm seven miles east of Kearney. John was one of the earliest solictors of farm insurance in the county. After Nora's death, John married his housekeeper, Mary C. Moore.
