Stabbed himself in the chest while splitting oak slats to make baskets. He was said to have been treated with "smoking wool", but died a few days later of infection. He purchased 440 acres on Dec. 8, 1836 and 156.3 acres on May 12, 1852. -Monroe County Deed books. His widow abandoned the farm after his death. Aman by the name of "Cussing John Johnson" and his parents moved into the abandoned house as Mary and the children left.
