Facts and Events
John settled in Heekin in 1836. HIs wife was a native of Lawrenceville, Ky. They lived in a cabin on the banks of Eagle Creek and Grassy Run. Grassy Run was known in those days as Wicked Willow because it overflowed its banks each spring. To avoid this flooding, John built a new home for his family ( 11 sons and 2 daughters) on higher ground on the Eagle Creek side of the Chipman Ridge Rd. The Lawrenceville school house was on the John Mitts Farm.
