RUTHERFORDTON- Dr. John Gilmer Mebane, 91, died August 25, 2006 at Carolina House, Spindale, N.C.

A memorial service honoring the life of Dr. J. G. Mebane will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2006 at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, Rutherfordton.

Dr. Mebane, son of Cummins Aiken and Sarah Lindsay Dick Mebane was born at home in Irving Park, Greensboro, N.C. on May 5, 1915. Dr. Mebane, familiarly known to his friends as Gyp, had one older brother, Cummins Aiken Mebane II, now deceased. Dr. Mebane grew up in Greensboro and Durham, N.C. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and went on to receive his degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School. He served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He and his wife, the joy of his life, settled in Rutherfordton where he practiced internal medicine and cardiology at the Norris Biggs Clinic. He retired in 1985 at age 69.

His wife, the former Harriet Elmore of Spindale predeceased him.

Survivors are his children, John G. Mebane Jr.. and wife Lee of Charlotte, Jane Bacot Mebane McCall and husband Mac of Taylorsville, William DeBerniere Mebane and wife Cathy of Greenville, S.C. and Robert Lindsay Mebane and wife Martha of Rutherfordton. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
