Notes from Alex Thompson: The Raleigh Register of 22 Apr 1814 reported that Maj. John B. Mebane had married Miss Martha Auston, but her maiden name was actually Alston.

The 1820 Census of Chatham Co. shows the John B Mebane household as consting to two males, age 26-45 (himself and a slave overseer) and no females; he had 33 slaves. It appears that one of his daughters was listed with his father and one listed with his father-in-law.

Their two daughters were named in John B's Chatham Co. will (dated 30 Jul 1820, WB B-31) as Cornelia and Martha Ann Mebane [both b. bet. 1815-1819]. His will also mentions his father John Mebane and named father-in-law Joseph John Alston as Executor. Neither of the daughters were mentioned in the 1836 will of their grandfather, John Mebane, and I presume that they died young.
