Funeral services for John Albert McLuen, 79, was Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Guthrie Center Methodist church with burial in the Morrisburg Cemetery. McLuen was manager of the Guthrie County Rural Electric Cooperative and had been since the organization was founded in 1938. He was widely known throughout the state and national organizations for REC's. Death came Sunday afternoon in the Guthrie Center hospital after an illness of about one year. McLuen was born in Jackson township west of Dale City and spent most of his childhood and adult life on the family farm. In 1934 he was named county chairman of the Corn and Hog program, later known as the Triple A program. Then he was named manager of the Guthrie Co. REC at its inception in 1938. During the time he was manager of the REC, he saw it grow and prosper into a 3000 member unit maintaining more than 1200 miles of power lines. McLuen at the start, served as lineman, office manager and foreman. Survivors included his wife, Bessie Dupuy McLuen; two sons, Wayne and Don both of Stuart, IA, two daughters, Mona Sellman of Stuart and Helen Downing of Marion, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. John Albert McLuen, a man who has been closely associated with farm programs in Guthrie county for the past 32 years, died Sunday night in the Guthrie county hospital. A native of the Stuart area, McLuen has been manager of the Guthrie County Rural Electric Co-operative since its inception in 1938. Prior to that he served as the first chairman of the county corn-hog program for four years. McLuen who was 79 years old entered the hospital several weeks ago. He had cancer and his condition grew worse until his death at 5:30 p m Sunday. Funeral rites for the man who has been so closely associated with the farm economy in this community will be held today at 2 p m from the Guthrie Center Methodist church. The Rev. Darrell Mitchell, pastor of the Guthrie church, and the Rev. Dale Shenefelt, pastor of the Panora Brethern church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Morrisburg cemetery north of Stuart. A native of Jackson township, Mr McLuen was born near Dale City December 20, 1886. He farmed in that area until 1934 when he moved to Guthrie Center to head the Corn-Hog program. He was a prime mover in the establishment of the rural electric cooperative and became its first and only manager. Under his management the Guthrie REC grew from just a dream to a solid organization covering parts of five counties with 1280 miles of lines which take electricity to 3427 rural users. During the time he was associated with the REC he was active in the state and nationals organizations. Mr McLuen first married Maude Miller who died many years ago. Later he married Bessie Dupuy who survives. Also surviving are sons, Wayne and Donald McLuen of Stuart, and daughters, Mona (Mrs. Ronald Sellman) Stuart, and Helen (Mrs. Tom Downing) Marion. There are 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family requests that those who care to should make memorial gifts to the Guthrie County Cancer Society.
