13 Jul 1895 - COL. JNO. C. McDONALD'S DEATH. One of the Oldest and Best Known Ross Countians Passed Aaway [sic] Tuesday Night. Col. John C. McDonald, of Poplar Ridge, died Tuesday night, at his home, being very nearly eighty-five years of age at the time of his death. The funeral was held this afternoon, interment being made in Concord cemetery, near Frankfort. The deceased was one of the oldest inhabitants of the county, and with his death another of the old Virginia settlers has gone to the unknown beyond. John Cutright McDonald was a conspicuous figure in politics early in the history of the county, and at one time, was state senator, representing this district. For a number of years, also, he was sheriff. He was a son of Col. John McDonald, who started here with Mussie's party in 1792. He finally came here in 1802, and settled in this county, at Poplar Ridge. Col. John McDonald was one of the strong characters in the early history of this county, and was the author of McDonald's sketchers, which are very valuable historical papers.
