Early Settler of Texas

1822 - An early settler of the Sabine Municipality, John Maximillian was granted a League of Land by the Mexican Government. El Lobanillo (Geneva, Sabine County, Texas) In this vicinity was historic Spanish rancho called El Lobanillo. It was the pueblo of Antonio Gil Y'Barbo (1729-1809), where his ill mother and other refugees remained when Spain evacuated colonists from western Louisiana and east Texas in 1773. Granted 1794 to Juan Ignacio Pifermo, and -inherited in early 1800s by John Maximillian Jr. (1782-1856), this is now known as oldest continuously occupied site in east Texas.

    30. John Maximillien, of the parish of Natchitoches, filed his notice claiming, by virtue of occupation, habitation, and cultivation, a tract of land lying within the late neutral territory, situated on the Bayou See, bounded on the west by Peter Patterson, on all other sides by vacant lands, and containing 640 acres. In support of which the following testimony was taken before the board:
"Lewis Latham and Peter Patterson, being sworn, severally say that they know the land claimed by John Maximillien in his above notice; that said land is situated and lying as is therein described; that said land was occupied, inhabited, and cultivated by the claimant, by his living, and growing corn, &c., thereon, on and previous to February 22, 1819; that said occupation, habitation, and cultivation has been continued by the claimant since that period to the present time; and that the claimant's improvement on the land claimed embraces about thirty acres."
We Are of opinion this claim ought to be confirmed, and consequently it will appear, in the abstract under the head of "third class."
