John Mardell's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 19th November 1770, when he married Elizabeth Arnold at Luton in Bedfordshire.

The marriage was to be tragically short; John died the following month. He was buried on 30th December 1770 at Luton. His burial record notes that he had lived at Newmill End to the south of the town.
