Facts and Events
John Lamont was born in 1847 in the Scottish captial, Edinburgh. He was son of James Lamont and Helen Waldie. In 1871, aged 23, John married at Ladykirk in Berwickshire to a girl called Sydney Scott, who was a week short of turning 18. They had a daughter, Mary Robson Lamont, in Ladykirk the following year. They then appear to have spent the next few years in Edinburgh, with at least two children being born in Edinburgh during the 1870s. By 1881 they had moved to the small town of Penicuik, where they appear in the 1881 census. John gave his occupation as paper finisher. In 1889, the family emigrated, settling in Massachusetts in the United States of America. They lived at different times at Chicopee in Hampden County and at South Hadley in Hampshire County. Overall, John and Sydney had nine children, but by 1900 only 3 were still living. Sydney died in 1908, aged 55. John outlived her by six years and died in 1914, aged 67. References
