Uncertain Identity

John Kirk, the son of William and Nancy (Mullins) Kirk, appears to be the best candidate in the 1850 census for the Dr. John Kirk who married Maranda Marcum. Dr. John Kirk's father's name is known to be William from both his marriage record (to Maranda Marcum) and his death record, and his birth place is known to be Pike, Kentucky from his death record. However, his marriage record gives his mother's first initial as P., so it is possible that he was not the son of William and Nancy (Mullins) Kirk, but rather of William and Polly (Collins) Kirk, married 2 Sep 1822 in Mason, Kentucky[4]. If the latter is true, it is not certain where he is in the 1850 census, and one or both of his parents may have been deceased by then.

An argument for the husband of Maranda Marcum being the son of William and Nancy (Mullins) Kirk, is that it appears that Maranda's father, Joseph Marcum, was living with at least 3 children of William and Nancy (Mullins) Kirk in the 1860 census[5], including Mary (Polly), whom Joseph later married.
