"He came to Philadelphia in 1750 or 1760 with his parents and his brother, Thomas. Apparently he was orphaned shortly thereafter and went to live with a Quaker weaver. Before the Revolution he moved to Newton, NJ. During the Revolution he served as a Lt. in Capt. Gunterman's Co., 2nd Regt. (Sussex Co.). He was at one time an aide to George Washington, and accompanied him on the 1779 march from West Point, NY to Morristown, NJ. Both he and his wife were buried in the Shotwell Burying Ground, later their remains were removed to the Newton Cemetery. No gravestones have been located.
