John James was the first white settler in Silver Creek Township. He chose Silver Creek because there was a Catholic mission there that was converting Indians to Catholicism and John was a seriously Catholic Irishman. He died when my grandmother was five years old, in 1907, but she remembered him speaking to her in Gaelic, which she didn't understand, but she would nod her head yes or no to his questions in an attempt to make him think she understood. She said her grandparents would laugh loudly when her head shake was wrong for the question. She told me that he was a very kind man. Grandma always said that he lived to be 111 years old and only spent one week in bed before he died.
