John Inman lived in the settlement of Inman's Bend in the Nolichucky river. It was first in Jefferson county, later in Cocke county. John operated a store. He married Ann Chilton, daughter of Thomas and Sapphira Chilton, 24 Dec 1793, in Jefferson county, territory of the United States south of the Ohio. I have a copy of their marriage bond. John was commissioned Captain in the regiment of Cocke county, during good behavior, December 11, 1790. I have a copy of this document. On October 3, 1805, an act was passed appointing John Inman as one of the Commissioners "to settle with the persons heretofore appointed commissioners in the county of Cocke to contract for the public and buildings and to regulate the town of Newport." John was also a long time chairman of the Cocke county court.

Bible is in the possession of Virginia Hale, Morristown, TN. It was examined and family record pages photocopied on October 5, 1992, by this contributor; Joseph A. Chilton, Jr.

Bible can be described as very old and large, about 8 1/2 by 11, very thick with fragile pages, worn badly, with the front cover, beginning pages, and the first 12 numbered pages missing. Page 13 through 1056 (last page) is intact. Publication date unknown.

The Bible was passed to Virginia Hale from her grandfather Shadrach (Harding) Inman, the son of John Inman married Anna Chilton.
