John Norman Howell was the child of William Halsey Howell, Sr. and his wife, Nancy Louisa Akers. He had a sister named Octavia Bell Howell who died from Influenza and Bronchial Pneumonia on 12 April 1936 in Floyd County, Kentucky. My father told me that his mother told him that both his brother, John Norman Howell and Octavia Bell Howell were sick with the flu and William and Nancy was unable to pay for medical assistance for both of the children. Since John Norman Howell was in better condition than his sister Octavia, he was given the medical assistance. I cannot even fathom how painful this decision must have been for the family.

It is no wonder that the family moved to West Virginia sometime after her death and before the birth of their next child in 1937.
