"5. John Holton, the eldest son of William and Mary Holton, was born after 1641 but before 1646, as he was evidently under age in 1662 but older than Samuel who was baptised 1646. Apparently before 1667, he went to live in Dedham, Mass., and he was made a freeman of Dedham, May 31, 1671. In the record of his marriage, March 1, 1666/7, he was called 'of Dedham'. In many of the records there he is called John Houghton, and as there were other Houghtons living in the town, records are rather difficult to distinguish. However as none of the Houghtons had a wife Abigail, when her name is mentioned we can be sure to whom the record pertains."
