    John Henderson, 80, Succumbs Tuesday

Resident of Coleman 65 Years Passes

John F. Henderson, Sr., for 65 years a resident of Coleman county, died at his home, 401 North Neches Street, Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock, May 22. He had been failing health for some time and had been confined to his bed for the past several months.

One of the most beloved residents of this area, the 80-year-old Colemanite was one of the few remaining "cowboys" who could recall the early range days in West Texas. While he had retired from the cattle and grocery business in 1934, he still took an interest in the ranch news of Texas and was fond of visiting his multitude of friends and recalling the experiences of early days.

Born Septembdr 23, 1864, in Bald Prairie, Robertson county, John Henderson came with his parents to Coleman county when 15 years of age. The family settled at the foot of the mountains just north of Talpa. And except for the times he had been on the trail of doing the labors of a cowboy on the expansive ranches of early day West Texas, Henderson had been a resident of Coleman county.

Blazing the cattle trails of the great Southwest, the deceased had worked the open range from Coleman county to the Rio Grande and drove cattle to Amarillo, Pecos, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arizona.

He married Miss Doris Hardin of Paint Rock on December 18, 1895, and that same year moved from Talpa to Coleman where they had resided ever since, for many years operating a grocery store, and also being interested in ranching.

A devout member of the First Christian Church for many years, he attended services regularly until failing health intervened.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 4:00 May 24, with the Rev. Thomas A. Gray, assisted by Rev. J. W. Gates and Rev. Floyd Johnson conducting. Interment will be in the City Cemetery under the direction of J. E. Stevens Co.

Pallbearers include W. P. Stobaugh, R. G. Hollingsworth, Harold Kinney, T. J. Allen, W. G. Taylor, Carl Fleming. Flower bearers are Mesdames W. P. Stobaugh, Hattie O'Hair, Claude McClellan, M___ton Collins, John Warren, Robert Gideon.

Survivors include his widow, one son, John Jr. of Fort Worth, two daughters, Irene and Belle of San Antonio, and one granddaughter, Mary Henderson, Coleman.

Out-of-town relatives attending the last rites were: E. A. Piller, Mrs. Ed Henderson, Harris Henderson of Abilene, Mrs. Roger Hamlet Crane and Mrs. Ott Edmtison [sic] of San Angelo.
