... John Caperton Hays, first son of John Coffee Hays. The younger Hays was known as "Buffalo Hump" in honor of his father's friend, Comanche Chief Buffalo Hump. According to legend, Chief Buffalo Hump, upon hearing of Hays' recent nuptials and his intended move to California during the gold rush, requested a final meeting with his old adversary. When the two met, the old Comanche expressed his admiration for the Ranger's warrior spirit and wished him many papooses in his marriage, but requested that the first would be named for him. Thus, young John, Jr. was known as "Buffalo Hump" Hays.

John E. Addison, J. A. Monroe, and Edward F. Byrne were close friends of Hays when he was sheriff (the first) of San Francisco. Addison, brigadier general of the California State Militia, held the post of California State Gauger, the official who gauges the alcohol content of all wines and spirits in packages over 15 gallons offered for sale. Colonel J. A. Monroe and Major Edward F. Byrne were also members of the California State Militia. ...
