  1. Source:Hardy, H. Claude. Hardy and Hardie, Past and Present, p. 374 shows this John dying young to allow for another son named John born 1674, a twin to Joseph. The reason for this appears to be an uncritical reading of VRs. Bradford VRs do show the following records (p. 64):
    HARDEY, Joseph, s. John, Feb. 3, 1674.
    HARDIE, John, s. John, Feb. 3, 1674. CT.R.

What stands out is that Joseph is listed coming from town records, while John is listed as coming from county records. Clearly town records did not include John, but did county records include Joseph? The answer appears to be NO:
old town copy: Joseph Hardy Son to John Hardy born Feb'y ye 3rd 1674.
town index: Joseph son of John Hardy born Feb 3 1674.
county record: John sonn of John Hardie born the 3th of february 1674.
newer county copy: John, sonn of John Hardie, borne the 3th of February, 1674.

(None of the Bradford records cited here appear to be the actual original since they don't match the spelling in the published VRs.) All these records are organized by birth year, and if John and Joseph were twins both would be listed in the same place. Yet that is true of NONE of these records. Town records list only Joseph. County records only contain John. It appears that John was submitted to the county instead of Joseph as a result of an error, not because there were twins.

So there is no reason to think this John died young. Rather he is probably the one who lived to adulthood and married Anne Savory (see cited Hardy genealogy, p. 385). The date of death is not known so there is no age at death to provide any guidance.
