According to all Federal Census records John (no middle initial) Haas was born in Tennessee in 1810. In 1810 the Haas/Hass surname (the Haas surname is pronounced as Hass)was found only in middle Tennessee. John's parents and siblings are unknown. John Haas first appears in the records in Monroe County, Mississippi in 1839 when he witnessed the will of a neighbor. He lived in the area of Tubb's Corner and appears to have been considered a trustworthy man. He served on the Board of Commissioners as trustee for the county's school land and was appointed by the court to value an estate. According to the obituary of John's son, John Franklin Haas, John was a Methodist preacher? A search of the Methodist Church Archives did not turn up any records on John. Perhaps John was a lay preacher. John bought 80 acres of land in Monroe County from the Federal Government, paying in cash. John and his family lived in Monroe County MS from 1839 until 1849 when he purchased land in Itawamba County MS. The property in Monroe county was taken back for unpaid taxes. John and his family lived in Itawamba County from 1849 until Itawamba was split to make Lee County and were then in Lee county. John was married twice. His first wife's name is unclear. John's son James listed his mother's name as Lucy and her date of death as 27 Aug 1851 in his family Bible. Lucy's name appears no where else in the records found to date. Although Lucy appears to be alive on 1 Jun 1850 when the Federal Census was taken the only female listed with the family that was old enough to be the wife of John is Mary Ann and Mary Ann's name appears no where else in the records found to date. John and Lucy/Mary Ann had five children. Of these two appear only on the 1850 census and no other records for them have been found to date. After Lucy/Mary Ann's death John married Talitha Robinson, the daughter of a neighbor. John and Talitha had four children. James listed his father's death date in his family Bible. It is believed that John is buried in Priceville Cemetery next to his second wife Talitha although the grave next to her is unmarked.

John Clifton and Egbert Betts were administrators of the estate of Wiley Daniel Clifton, a wealthy planter. According to this deed, on 22 September 1849 John Haas had purchased from Wiley Daniel Clifton the south half of Section 1, Township 10 South, Range 7 East about four miles north of Monroe County in Itawamba County. Apparently the deed was never recorded and lost because this instrument was conveying this property purchased by Haas during 1849. The property is located about 2 miles north of New Chapel Methodist Church and about 3 miles southeast of old Richmond. At about the time this pro-active deed was delivered in 1857, John Haas and wife Talitha sold this property in two parcels of 160 acres each. Information from Bob Franks Itawamba Co MS courthouse.

  13.   1850 Agricultural schedule, Itawamba County, Mississippi, in 1850 U.S. Federal Census
    7 Nov 1850.

7 Nov 1850 Agricultural Schedule: John Haas with 35 acres of improved land and 185 acres of unimproved land land worth $1,000.00. His livestock holdings were: 8 horses, 2 asses, 2 milk cows, 2 working oxen, 6 other cattle, and 8 swine for a total livestock value of $400.00. Located: Mississippi State Archives, Jackson, Mississippi

Information received from Rebecca Haas Smith (deceased). I have not seen this schedule.
According to this entry John has 220 [35+185] acres of land. On this date the deed records show John had - 320 acres purchased from Clifton Estate in Itawamba Co and 80 acres in Monroe county not yet taken back for taxes, for a total of 400 acres. Instructions to Enumerators for 1850 census required to record the total of all land owned. There are 180 acres missing. Even if the census taker didn't record the 80 acres in Monroe Co. there is still 100 acres missing from the Clifton Estate purchase. Census taker's error?
