Facts and Events
John Gray's first wife Agnes Malcolm, died shortly after Agnes Gray was born. Agnes Malcolm's sister, Jessie Malcolm, came to help with the family. There was at that time a rule or law prohibiting the marriage of sister's in law and John and Jessie were not married until the law was changed. John and Jessie had one child, Angus Douglas Gray (Douglas). The story is told that all the children accepted Jessie as their mother and that Douglas had no idea that she was not the mother of all the brothers and sisters until after he had been wounded while serving in World War I. Douglas was at a meeting to encourage volunteers for the Canadian war effort and the speaker mentioned that his mother had sent her only son to serve in Europe. On returning home he asked his mother what the reference was about and only then learned that his brothers and sisters had a different mother. This story was told by Margaret Ray in November 1998.[Ferguson.FBK.FTW]
