Old Soldier Passes On Mr. John B. Graves. a veteran of the Civil War, passed on, Monday morning at his home 294 Washington Street after having been confined to his bed for more than a year, in his eightieth year. He was a native of Marblehead and served nine monthes inthe Civil War, enlisting in Company B, 8th Infantry, on September 15, 1862 and serving until August 7, 1863 when he was discharged. Mr. Graves was an attendant at the Universalist Church, a member of Atlantic Lodge IOOF, and had served as a quartermaster of John Goodwin Jr. Post GAR for more than thirty years, always taking great pride in his membership in the Grand Army. His wife died several years ago, and he is survived by only one son, George P. Graves. By trade he was a shoe cutter and a machinist. The deceased was at one time a sailor and made a trip to the Grand Banks as one of a crew whose only surving member is Mr. Richard Goldsmith. At another time, he was a manufacturer of shoes under the firm name of Graves & Winslow. He was born on August 7, 1838 and had been an Odd Fellow for fifty years. Funeral services were held at his late home on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. U. G. Milburn of Salem, after which the body was laid at rest in Waterside Cemetery, with the GAR performing their burial service at the grave. from Marblehead Messenger, June 28, 1918 Marblehead Directory, 1877 John B.
