"April 29, 1893 - Squire Garner Drops Dead on Railroad Track – Saturday afternoon J. W. Garner and family were returning from Farmer City, where they had been to visit a sick daughter. At the Wiley school house a mile west of town Mr. Garner complained of being cold and got out to walk the rest of the way on the railroad, about 200 yards distant. He reached the railroad and had one but a short distance when he fell, his feet laying on the track and his head in the ditch, his tracks showing that he had walked straight and naturally up to the spot where he fell...It was developed that he had shown symptons of heart trouble for two years past. Mr. Garner was 61 years old and was born in Cass county, coming to McLean county when a young man. He came to Colfax from West township eleven years ago, and at the time of his death was proprietor of the Hotel de Grand. He was a school director, and was just finishing his second term as justice of the peace. He was also a local preacher of the Methodist church. In 1852 he was married to Lucy Carver. Two children were born to them, when the wife died. His second wife was Miss M. A. Downing, by whom he has eight children. The wife and all the children survive. They are: Wm. Garner, Mrs. C. Wolcott and Ira Garner of Nebraska; Joe and Vallie Garner, of Iroquois county; Mrs. Carrie Davis, of Farmer City, and Mrs. Lida McAuley, Mrs. Della Rummell, Mary and Elton Garner, of Colfax." {McLean County Obituaries, <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~henline/mclean/obituaries.html>, 28 Dec 2007}
