Overview

John Cowan is identified in family histories as marrying Mary Pickering (b 1779) September 27, 1808, Rockingham County, Va. Mary was the daughter of WILLIAM PICKERING and BARBRA WOODLEY.

At about the same time (August 10, 1819) William Cowan married Mary's sister Catherine. Jacob Cowen married another sister Susannah Pickering (December 09, 1813). John, William, and Jacob are presumably brothers. The father of John, William and Jacob is probably the Henry Cowan who appears in the 1810 census as HOH with ten members, living in the same township as John.
