Overview

The following has been sourced from a biographical entry in a local history published in 1991[3] taking account of the outcome of subsequent research.

John Cowan was born circa 1811 - it is not known where he was born, although some sources claim that he was born in Belfast, Ireland. The earliest known record for him is his marriage to Margaret Lammey (also spelt by some as Lammy) during 1837 in the Civil Parish of Donacavey in Tyrone, Ireland.[4].

In 1852, John, Margaret and five children immigrated to South Australia on the ship Epaminondas, arriving on 2 August 1852.[5] The family settled in North Adelaide where several businesses started including a horse-drawn taxi service that conveyed passengers between North Adelaide and Adelaide, the colony’s capital city. Two more children were born in North Adelaide.

In 1856, John purchased 211 acres (85.4 hectares) from the South Australian Government in what is now known as Two Wells. On this, he built his first house in 1858 followed by a small tavern (licensed in 1860). In 1867, he opened a new hotel within the Two Wells township itself to take better advantage of the passing trade. This two storey structure is still trading as a hotel under the name the Two Wells Tavern. John died on 24 July 1879.
