John Cooper (1642 - 1703)

John Cooper was the son of John Cooper (1610 - 1689). He was born on May, 28 1642 in New Haven. He was also baptized on May 28, 1642 at the First Congregational Church. He married Mary Thompson (c. 1652-1714), widow of Samuel Lines Mary Thompson, daughter of John and Dorothy Thompson, on Dec. 27, 1666 in New Haven, CT. The town meeting of Feb. 7, 1670 appointed him as pounder (fence viewer) for the little quarter toward the hill. He was appointed constable at the September 18, 1676 meeting after getting equal votes as John Morris but there were some disagreements on the decision and responsibilities. John Cooper refused and presented reasons for this that were not accepted and he had to pay a forty shilling fine for not serving. At the March 13, 1676/77 meeting he was appointed surveyor of the highways for the coming year. He received 37 ½ acres of land in the third division of land in 1680. He is listed as a Proprietor of New Haven, CT, in 1685. He died in 1703 in New Haven, CT and is buried there.
