Cowans of Teagues Delight

Overview

John Coen is said to have been born about 1690 in Baltimore Maryland. Some sources indicate that he was born in Cecil County, on "Tegg's Delight". This seems plausible given the fact that he married an Susannah Teague. Some records indicate that the "Coen" and "Cowan" surname was used more or less indiscriminately in this family. A person tracing their descent through John's son William has taken part in the Cowan YDNA project. Their results come close to matching the YDNA results for descendants of the so-called Seven Cowan Brothers, but current analysis suggests that the match is not close enough to s. Some suggests that they have a relatively recent common ancestor in a genealogically recent timeframe.

There is a long standing tradition that the Seven Brothers were related to either the Pequea Creek Cowan's or the Octoraro Creek Cowans of Old Chester County. While there are similarities in the naming ways among these families, key family members in Old Augusta can not be identified with either group, and YDNA evidence suggests that they are unrelated. The Seven Brother Cowans line is, however, closely related to John Coen, as demonstrated by YDNA results. The possiblity exists that he is either the founding father of this lineage, or is closely related to that founding father.

Maryland Marriages 1634-1777 gives two Cowan marriages at about the same time, both in Baltimore County:

Land Record

intermediate Source:Ancestry Public Member Tree
Original Source:Maryland Land Records (MDLandRec.Net) Book B G; Pg 186-88 (1757)

Baltimore County; Edward COWIN sold to Thomas KELLY; 1 July 1758, Edward COWIN sold to Thomas KILEY for 60 pounds, 100 acres of land being part of a tract of land called COWINS Settlement. Originally granted to John COWIN Senior deceased for 176 acres of land which was by a deed of gift conveyed by the said John COWIN Senior deceased to his son John COWIN Junior a son the record TB C, pg 215-16 appears the 100 acres of land conveyed. Release of dower, came Mary COWIN wife to the said Edward COWIN. [Note: the 100 acres mentioned was actually conveyed to John COWEN's son Thomas COWEN and 76 acres was conveyed to John COWEN"s son, John COWEN. It is likely this Edward is also a son of John COWEN Senr, but this is the only document I have linking him to the family. It is unlikely because of the time frame that this Edward could be a son of the mentioned Thomas. Plus, Thomas COWEN, the son of John, sold the 100 mentioned acres in 1749 to Edward MITCHELL. It is possible the land reverted back to the COEN family. Additional research needed to determine what happened.]
