  4.   Source:Bartlett, J. Gardner. Simon Stone Genealogy, p. 58, interprets the Dorchester record as 1700/1, while the Capen Family chooses 1701/2. To the extent the copy online (here) maintains the original order, it appears Bartlett is correct. Bartlett's choice also provides a more like spacing of sibling births, since the surrounding children are born in 1698 and 1703.
  5. Unfortunately, it appears that the Capen Family book is hopelessly confused and wrong in its arrangement of John Capens (as has been documented on the Source page for this source), a mistake that appears to spread out and infect its treatment of most of the John Capens for a couple of generations. In this case, Preserved's son John is shown by record to be b. 1694 and d. 1695 and is not mentioned in the division of his estate in 1715 so probably is not the man who married Ruth Thayer. The age at death in Braintree 1748 matches the birth of the son of Samuel, so he is almost certainly the husband of Ruth Thayer, and not the husband of Elizabeth Hall.

This conclusion is supported by two deeds showing that the son of Samuel Capen, having brothers Samuel and Purchase, was a cordwainer, and the husband of Ruth Thayer of Braintree was a cordwainer. (The other deeds of John Capen, presumably a different person, give occupation as yeoman.)

10 Aug 1737 John Capen of Braintree Cordwainer and Ruth his Wife for £41-10-0 to Ebenezer Jones of Dorchester 2 acres in Dorchester. Signed by John Capen and Ruth Capen.

Note also, that Ruth's husband is called John Capen Tertius (as in the 1730 deed above) in the recorded births of their children from 1727 to 1732. The John Capen that was b. 1685 died in 1733, so in 1734, Ruth's husband is now referred to as John Jr. The remaining, older, John is probably the son of Samuel Capen and Susanna Payson, b. 1696.
