  5. Source:Vital records of Salem, Massachusetts, to the end of the year 1849 (228580), p. 1:145, shows two possible John Buttolphs born in Salem:
    Buttolph, John, s. John and Hana (Gardner), [born] 11 : 7 m : 1664. CT. R. [11 Sep 1664]
Buttolph, John, s. George and Hanna, [born] Oct. 15, 1667. CT. R.
But neither is a good match. The second is 5 years off the birth calculated from his age at death, and the first one died young according to another record on p. 5:130:
Buttolph, John, s. John and Hana (Gardner), [died] Apr. 23, 1665. CT. R.
The Driver Family, p. 295, "said to be son of John and Hannah (Gardner) Buttolph", and the two children of his first marriage are named John and Hannah, so one is tempted to say John's parents are John and Hannah (Gardner) Buttolph, but that requires that two mistakes were made here:
    1. The second birth record listed the father George when it should have said John
    2. The age at death was incorrect, and was only 45, not 51.
More evidence is needed before this many mistakes can be overlooked.
  6. Dr. McCracken states, "Salem Vital Records call this man John, son of George and Hannah Buttolph, incorrectly transposing the names of father and son, at least so in the printed version."

The nuncupative will of Lieutenant John Buttolph, dated 13 January 1692/93, mentions "… my son George his wife Elizabeth Buttolph …" and names eldest son John Buttolph as one of his executors, indicating that he had living sons by each name, thus supporting Dr. McCracken's assertion concerning George.

Entry for the marriage of John & Hannah (Gardner) Buttolph includes the birth of John 1664 and death of John 1665.
