He was a tailor in Ipswich, living on his father's homestead. His estate was valued at £225 8s 10d. (In the accountof the Brewer family of Sudbury in William Richard Cutter, Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts [New York, 1908], 2:623, the three known children of John Brewer of Ipswich were attributed to John of Cambridge and Sudbury. John is called William by Cutter, but given the same birthdate.)
