In articles on Tommy Ryan it is noted:
In 1898, after triumphing in a brutal brawl with Tommy West, Ryan turned his attention to the middleweight ranks. He captured the championship with a twenty-round decision over Jack Bonner. Ryan never relinquished this title, holding it until his retirement in 1907. This ten-year hold on the middleweight crown is unrivaled.[1]
BUTLER-BONNER BOUT ENDS IN SMALL SIZED RIOT
Never in the annuals of prize fighting in this city has such a scene been witnessed as that which occurred last night in the second round of the boxing bout between Joe Butler...and Jack Bonner...at the Arena. In the second round of the go Butler landed a pretty left-hand punch on the point of Bonner's jaw and knocked him to the floor. Scarcely had Bonner regained his feet before Butler was at him again. They clinched and both men fell against the ropes and then to the floor, Butler on top of Bonner. Then Butler seemed to lose his head and began punching Bonner where he lay. Referee Crowhurst made vain efforts to separate the men, and finally by the united efforts of the contestants' seconds managed to drag Butler away. As he raised him from the floor Crowhurst told him that on account of his foul tactics he was disqualified. Hearing this, Butler seemed to lose all self-control and pursuing Crowhurst across the ring, delivered a punch that knocked him down.
Then a scene of the wildest disorder occurred. The police jumped the ropes and entered the ring, while the spectators arose and rushed toward the ring. Others shouted or hissed and disorder reigned supreme. Ten minutes elapsed before order was restored. The men in the meantime left the ring and the crowd dispersed. The police were ready to arrest Butler, but Referee Crowhurst would not make the charge.
