_DCAUSE: Sickness during imprisonment as Civil War soldier According to the Censusof 1860, John was living with his mother at that time. John apparently worked the land to help support his invalid mother. (Statement of John L. Cupp submitted on 5/19/1866 In the spring of 1864, John enlisted in Company L of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry, under the command of Jehu F. Wotring of Preston County. (Dorothy Bonafield Snyder) He was captured at the Battle of New Creek on 11/28/1864 and was imprisoned at Richmond. On 2/15/1865, he was paroled at Aiken's Landing and moved to Annapolis, MD on 2/17/1865. Two days later, he was listed as a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, where he was to be held until he was exchanged. He apparently had become extremely ill during his imprisonment and died there on 2/24/1865. 1 1/2 years later, his mother applied for a pension on his behalf. (Dorothy Bonafield Snyder) ) |
