1850 census-John O is 16 John had gone south from PA to NC 10 May 1860 where he was the foreman of The Hearld in Wilmington, NC. Obviously he returned north once the Civil War began. North Carolina Marriage Collection - John O Beck; male; married Mary A Gaskill; female; 17 May 1860; New Hanover, NC Military discharge document (in possession of author, see Beck notebook) has an oath of identity on one side but none of the blanks are filled in; the front side shows: Know ye that John O Beck Private of Captain Frank Pott's Co. B 27th Regiment PA Volunteer Militia, who was enrolled on the 17 JUN 1862, to serve during existing emergency is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, this 31 JUL 1863, at Harrisburg, PA, by reason of expiration of term of service, (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist) Said John O Beck was born in Pottsville in the State of PA, is 29 years of age, 5' 10", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enrolled, a printer. Given at Harrisburg, Pa., this 31 JUL 1863. (I cannot read the signature, maybe) W. F. P....., Lieut. 1st Cavalry USA, Mustering Officer, also signed, Frank Pott, Captain, Commanding Company. 1870 census-John O Beck is 36, a printer with value of personal estate at $275. Wife: Mary, age 36. Children: Robert, 8; Margrete, 7; Charles, 4; John, 3; Harry, born Sep 1869 age 8 mos. Robert Kennedy is also living in the household. He is Mary's father and is 87. There is a domestic servant, Cath McCormack, born in Ireland and cannot read or write. Everyone else is born in PA 1880 census-John O Beck, 46, clerk in coal & iron co. Wife: Mary A, 45. Children: Robert K, 17; Marretta, 16; Charles P, 13; John S, 11; Harry P, 10. Elner Woneckdorff, 30, sister and her children: Isaac B, 4 and Stephen H, 2 are also living in the house. Mary Sturn, 26 is a servant.
