According to the Biographic Memoirs of Jay County, Johathan and his family remained in Pennsylvania until 1856, "when they took the train for the west. They arrived at Winchester, and from there went to Pike township, Jay county, where forty acres of partially improved land was entered. This was afterward sold and the family located in Jackson township, where the wife and mother passed to her reward." They were members of the German Lutheran Church.
