    JOHN T. ASKEY DEAD,
    Resident of This County Since 1874 Passed Away at His Home in Red Oak Tuesday Morning.
    John T. Askey, respoected resident of this county since 1874, and of Red Oak since 1910, died at his home, 103 W. Joy St. at 12:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, October 23, 1923, from cancer. He submitted to a surgical operation some time ago, but failed to recover. He was sick for 5 weeks.

    The funeral was held at the home of his son, Ernest G. Askey, 307 Elm St., Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. H.S. Wilkinson, of the Methodist church, conducting the services. Singing was by Mrs. Clarence Stephenson, Mrs. M.C. Ciger, Russell Stephenson, and Chas. O. Briggs. The pallbearers were A.W. Faust, John Conkel, A.M. Boyer, L.B. Fuller, Lon Sheppard and J.E. Gochenour. Burial was in Red Oak cemetery. W.H. Beard, from Chicago and Herman Shellenberger, from Salt Lake City, Utah, were here to attend the funeral, as were the following from this section: Mrs. T.A.     Mr. Askey was born in Howard county, PA., Nov. 8, 1847, and was married at Ridott, Ill., to Miss Luzetta Moyer on July 23, 1874. They came to this county immediately after their marriage, and Mr. Askey engaged in farming until 1910, when they moved to Red Oak. Since then he had been employed in the S.A. Shields feed barn and the F.W. Buehler garage, continuing in the latter employment until taken sick. While farming he lived in the Elliott and Wallin localities.

    Mr. Askey is survived by his wife and four children as follows: Ellis E. Askey, Ernest G. Askey, Mrs. Orpha Black and Mrs. Hazel Morgan, of Red Oak. He leaves 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister, also survive. They are Albert Askey, Ridott, ILL., Frank Askey, Freeport, ILL., Mrs. Lizzie Shellenberger, Salt Lake City, Utah.

    Deceased was a companionable, charitable, big hearted man, a good neighbor and a staunch friend. The large Attendance at the funeral, including many from the neighborhoods in which he formerly lived, indicate the respect in which he was held wherever known. The sorrowing family have the sincere sympathy of many friends.
