John Apps' origins have yet to be established. Judging by the age quoted at his burial, he was probably born about 1759. His first confirmed sighting is in 1811, when he was married at Sidlesham in Sussex to a widow named Frances Chaffer, formerly Roper, who had three surviving children from her first marriage.

John died in 1820, aged 60. Frances outlived him by about 27 years.
