John Turner was baptised as John Allen on 18th June 1809 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, the son of Sarah Allen. His baptism record does not name his father. When John was about two years old his mother married a farmer named John Turner. When John Turner wrote his will in 1838 he referred in it to his two sons "John Allen and Edward Turner" - thus acknowledging John Allen as his son.

John appears to have lived with his mother until her death in 1851. He became a farmer.
