John Turner was baptised as John Allen on 18th June 1809 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, the son of Sarah Allen. His baptism record does not name his father. When John was about two years old his mother married a farmer named John Turner. When John Turner wrote his will in 1838 he referred in it to his two sons "John Allen and Edward Turner", acknowledging John Allen as his son. John's father died in 1839.
The 1841 census finds John living with his mother and sisters on North Street in Heckington.
On 22nd November 1843, aged 34, John married Sarah Dring at South Kyme, just north of Heckington.
They returned to Heckington after their marriage. Late in 1844 they had a daughter called Sarah Allen Turner. Sadly, John's wife Sarah died a few days after giving birth, aged 27.
John appears in the 1851 census living with his mother, daughter and two servants in Heckington, and working as a farmer. His mother died later that year.
On 3rd March 1852, aged 42, John married again. His second wife was Ann Burrus, and they married at the Register Office in Lincoln, where she had been living with her brother and sister. They do not appear to have had any more children.
In the 1861 census John was living with Ann, his daughter Sarah and two servants on North Street in Heckington. By 1871 John and Ann were living on Church Street in Heckington with a niece, and John was described as a farmer of 40 acres employing one man and one boy.
John died at Heckington on 24th May 1877, aged 67. His burial record notes that he had also been a Baptist Minister. Ann survived him by just under two years.
