According to the Ancestry discussion thread, the young man emigrated from Holland to America in 1848 together with his betrothed, who would have been around 14 at the time, and her parents and siblings.

However, immigration records at CastleGarden.org indicate that he arrived on the ship Henry from Rotterdam on 27 May 1848 not with the de Mooij family, but with several members of the Sauvijn family, who were most likely cousins on his mother's side: Pieternella (24), Cornelia (14), Willem (17), Pieter (11), Maria (nee Addison) (47), Jan (22), Frans (18), Johannes (43), Pieter (40).
