Michael received a Land Warrant issued for 250 acres. He was with Colonel Anthony Lerch's Saucon Cavalry, one of the first units to respond at the outbreak of the French and Indian War. Michael was also with the first troops to arrive at the Massacre of the Moravians in December of 1755. He drove the first wagon from Northampton County, taking food and supplies to Valley Forge at the end of 1777. Michael was listed as a Sergeant in Captain John Wagoner's 8th company of the 1st Battalion, Northampton County Militia, Pennsylvania.

He signed the Oath of Allegiance on June 1 1778.

He was known as Alt Vater Mike (Mike the Elder) and was the founder of Hellertown, Pennsylvania.
