William and Joan had 17 children, three of which were unidentified. Joan died in August of 1649 at age 42, no doubt worn out by childbearing, and William lived on until December 1666, aged 77.

Joan Barnard's families on both sides are recorded as having lived in the area for many generations -- the Barnards for four in Shepton Mallet dating back to around 1500, the Smythes for five in the town of Wrington, dating to 1470.
