Jesse served in Company E, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry, Union Forces during the civil war. Jesse was a trader and known to carry large sums of money. He left home early on the morning of March 13, 1899 with a lot of money in his saddle bags. He was on his way to Newport, Tennessee to transact some business. He did not return home that evening. His body was found the next morning floating in the Pigeon River between Denton & Bluffton.
