Overview

Based on information from Sandy, 13 nov 2013:
Jerry Burdette Cowan descends from John Cowen and Margaret ? of Cowan’s Ford in what is now Mecklenburg, NC. John’s will identifies his children as John, Joseph, Hannah, and William. Joseph left Mecklenburg for Burke County. While living in Burke, Joseph married and fathered several children, one of whom was named John. John used the Cowen spelling. Descendents from his first marriage live in western states. Joseph (1753-835) married Nancy Buchanan (1776-1833) of Burke County in 1799. Joseph and second wife Nancy left Burke County for Haywood County where both died. Their unmarried daughter Nancy gave birth to Jerry Burdette Cowan. All are buried in what is now Jackson County NC. According to a pension request filed in Haywood County, Joseph served in the Revolutionary War while living in Anson County.

According to bastardy document filed in Haywood County, Jerry Burdette Cowan's father was Ezekiel Gribble (1803-1899. Nancy never married, had no other children though her siblings did. Gribble died in Colorado. Burdette married Martha Vaughn and the two had many children. Some of their descendants live in Jackson County along with descendants of Joseph and Nancy Cowan's other children.
