He was baptized on the 21st of June 1807 at Cathédrale St-Jean-Baptiste in Nicolet, Québec, Canada. He is listed as JeanBpte Beausoleil Vilat. His father is Ambroise Vilat dit Beausoleil and his mother is listed as Ursale Portelance (should be Martel).

His surname has been seen as Beausoleil, Beausoleil dit Vilat, Bosila, Besley, and Bosely.

The 1850 Census does not list Jean Baptiste's name (also known as John) it has his age, that he is a laborer, and that he was born in Canada. His information is on the bottom of the page. Page 469B shows Theotiste is listed as Zaertis Bosila along with their three children, Mary (age 10), Mitchel (age 5, also listed as deaf and dumb), and Olivine (age 2). The children were born in New York.

In 1870, he is listed as John Bosely living in Mooers, Clinton County, New York, with his wife, Gertrude, and two others (Mary, age 26 and Angeline, age 2).

The 1880 Census shows him as John Besley; head of household with his wife, Harriet, his son, Exavier, his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, and grandchildren (Mary A, age 7; Ellenor, age 4; Emma, age 3; and Alexander [Alexandra], age 2.
