Facts and Events
FROM: Beaumont Enterprise website. Janette Sebring Lowrey is the American author of the bestselling children's book, The Poky Little Puppy, one of seventeen titles she wrote. She was born at home to parents Ruluph Sebring, a superintendent of schools, and Janette Scurry Sebring, in Orange, Texas. Her mother was the founder of the Ladies Shakespeare Club in their home town, which later evolved into the Orange Woman's Club. One of Lowrey's early books, Rings on Her Fingers, was set in the town where she grew up, and there has been much speculation among townspeople about which of the characters represent which historical citizens. Lowrey lived most of her life in relative obscurity, moving to San Antonio as an adult, and passing away there in 1984 at the age of 92. Her most popular children's book, The Poky Little Puppy, is still in print in multiple versions. It was one of the twelve original "Little Golden Books" published by Random House. References
