James was 9 when the photo was taken, the youngest son in a large family. All of his grandparents were Dutch. James was a "double" cousin of Annie Yonker, as their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters. James' father died in 1896, and in 1900, James' family lived on Indiana Ave. in Calumet Township (next to Amanda DeVries), with two older brothers working to support the family.

James married Catherine Hoort in 1918, and they had 3 or 4 children (this information from an online tree, as I've been unable to locate the family in the 1920 or 1930 census). James died in 1974 in Cook County.
