James Winfrey Jr. was the illegimate son of Dicca (Dicey) Winfrey and an unknown father. James was born in 1826 in Henry Co. TN. Later on he was offered the name Pemberton by his stepfather, but he chose to remain a Winfrey and he was raised by his Grandfather, James Madison Winfrey. Moved from Miller County to Laclede County right after the civil war. James served in the Missouri Home Guards in Miller County. Application for Pension filed July 11, 1890. Held rank of Private. Reasons for Pension: Blind in left eye and right eye afflicted and crippled in left ankle. Also kidney troubles and general infirmities of old age. Received $12 a month starting March 7, 1891. Declared Dead on rolls as of Feb. 15, 1891 and dropped from rolls on Mar. 30. Medical records say at 65 he was 5' 10 3/4" tall, weighed 148 lbs, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes. He was paid for 4 mo. 5 days in the Army $41.04, July 13, 1864. They moved to Laclede Co. around 1869 in the Spring Hollow Township, also lived in Lebanon Township. Found James in the 1880 Census of Laclede Co. John, Martha, Mary, Olivia, William, and Ambrose still at home.
