Obituary copied from Monroe's Find-a-Grave memorial page:
Monroe J.M. Whisler, age 94, died after a short illness of pneumonia. One of the old citizens of this section of the state, J.M. Whisler of Atlanta, died Wed. afternoon at five at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.P. McDaniels. Following an illness of only a few days, on Mon he became ill with lobar pneumonia and quickly his condition became critical. On account of his age, he was 94 years old, there was little hope that he could survive. Mr. Whisler lived all of his life in the Atlanta community and many of these years were spent in Atlanta where he was one of the early day merchants.
The deceased was one of four children born to Jacob and Sarah Jackson Whisler. He was born on a farm two and one half miles southeast of Atlanta on August 20, 1845, and in 1866, at the age of 21, he moved to Alanta where he became associated with A.G. Walton in the merchantile business under the firm name, Walton and Whisler. For 49 years, he was active as a merchant in Atlanta, retiring in 1915.
Of the four children in the family, there are still surviving two sisters, Mrs. M.V. Goodpasture, age 97 in the McDaniel home at Atlanta and Mrs. B. D. Sowers of St. Louis, who is 93 years old.
Dec 29, 1870 Mr Whisler was maried to Susan Fleming in Atlanta with Rev. King officiating. She died Nov 25, 1938. To their union were born five children, one dying in infancy (unknown gender) and a daughter, Grace died in 1928. Those suviving are Mrs. McDaniel of Atlanta, Glen of Marion and Lowell of Wankesha, Wis. there are three grandchildren Byron, McDaniel of Atlanta, Betty Jean Whisler of Marion and Donald Whisler of Waukesha. Very active member of the Atlanta Christian church. Also a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and the Maccabee lodge for many years.
