James Waddington is recorded in State Archives (Microfilm CY2142 P3-11 Frame 141 and 292) on Jury lists for 1855 and 1858. He is shown as resident in Marlborough St Longford. His qualification to serve was shown as: 1855 - House 30 pounds, 1858 - Clear personal estate 500 pounds. His occupation is listed as "shoemaker". Note obtained from Jean Hockley in England of an entry on Ancestry .com: James Waddington, b York 1811, son of John Waddington who could be the same person as he was believed to have left Yorkshire between 1830-40, same as my guess. He immigrated as a free settler possibly with another member of his family. (not yet confirmed) He is buried in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church, Cressy Tas together with his wife. HOW DID JAMES COME TO TASMANIA (see http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/262884/immigration-guide.pdf) In June 1841 an immigraton "agent" was appointed for the purpose of selecting appropriate persons to be given assisted passages to redress the imbalance of released convicts and unskilled labourers who had been bought out under previous schemes. The new system only lasted until Sept 1842. Was James bought out under this scheme? Given that he married in 1843 it is possible. Entry found in New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 for James Waddington aged 27 arriving on ship "Clyde" on 21 April 1840 accompanied by Margaret Waddington aged 26, both described as Farm servants Place of origin shown as Lancashire. Bounty 18 pounds each. This seems unlikely as another document from the same time shows that his place of origin was Lanarkshire, Scotland (name spelt Weddington on this document) Which is correct? Also on the same ship: Thomas, (28) a wheelwright Sarah Dairywoman (29) and Joseph (2) Waddington from Lancashire Religion Methodist both could read and write bounty payment 18 pounds each.
