'26 Mar 1754 [assumed to by a typo for 1654] Elizabeth wife of Dr. James Taylor petitioned the governor and council to grant a separation from her husband [citing Adventurers of Purse and Person Virginia 1607 - 1625, Compiled by Annie Lash Jester, p. 302]'
'Elizabeth Underwood married first Dr. James Taylor. He was not a kind or faithful husband to her so she felt compelled to appeal to the Governor and council for a separation in order that she could return to the home of her mother. The details are such that it would have been impossible for her to remain with him without being killed or maimed. Before the matter was finally settled the husband obligingly departed this life according to the first record book of Surrey County. May 1, 1655 the estate account of Mr. James Taylor returned and among other items, Mr. Francis Slaughter was paid one third of the estate in right of his wife.'
